The Pen Was Always in Our Hands

Maybe destiny was never written. Maybe we are writing it.

For generations people have said that everything in life is already written.

In India we grow up hearing the phrase: “jo likha hai, wo hoga” — what is written will happen.

The idea is comforting.
It suggests that somewhere, beyond our understanding, life follows a script already decided.

But sometimes I find myself asking a simple question:

If everything is written… who is the writer?

I look at the world and I don’t see a cosmic author writing our story.
What I see instead is humanity — billions of people making choices every single day.

Some choices heal the world.
Others break it.

Some people plant trees.
Some people burn forests.

Some build bridges between cultures.
Others build walls between hearts.

Slowly, through these decisions, the story of the world unfolds.

Maybe destiny is not a script waiting somewhere in the universe.

Maybe destiny is simply the accumulation of human actions.

Every act of kindness writes a new paragraph.
Every act of hatred writes another.

And the world becomes the book we collectively create.

We often wait for a savior — someone who will arrive and fix everything.

But history repeatedly shows something different.

Change rarely comes from a mysterious force.

It comes from people who decide to act.

People who decide to care.

People who decide to take responsibility.

Which leads to a quiet but powerful truth:

We are not just characters in the story.
We are also the writers.

Sometimes we write chapters of courage.

Sometimes we write chapters of conflict.

Sometimes we become our own saviors.

And sometimes, without realizing it, we become our own enemies.

So maybe the real question was never:

“What is written for me?”

The real question is:

What am I writing today?

Because if the future exists anywhere, it exists in the decisions we make right now.

And perhaps the most honest realization is this:

The pen was never somewhere in the universe.

The pen was always in our hands.
